Thomas Zemb recognized by the French Academy of Sciences for his research in the physical chemistry of fluids applied to nuclear recycling.

Awards (28/10/2025)

At its October 2025 session, held under the dome of the Institut de France in Paris, the French Academy of Sciences awarded around fifty prizes. Among the laureates was Thomas Zemb, honored with the Chemistry Section Prize for the excellence of his work in the physical chemistry of fluids applied to the recycling of nuclear materials.

The Academy also highlighted his major contributions to the development of scientific instrumentation dedicated to X-ray and light scattering, which led to the discovery and characterization of cationic–anionic crystals with tunable charge. More recently, his research has provided deeper insight into the role of hydrotropes in spontaneous emulsification, paving the way for new peri-critical extraction processes. These advances hold great promise for innovation in hydrometallurgy and for accelerating the transition toward more sustainable recycling technologies.
